Artists of Picacho Hills host Art in the Garden tour

Posted
For seven years, the Artists of Picacho Hills — an artists’ association formed by a group of friends in 2008 which includes painters, sculptors, photographers, woodworkers, potters, jewelers, textile and multimedia artists and more — has been hosting its annual Art in the Garden tour, during which member artists display their finest wares in the beautiful gardens throughout the exclusive neighborhood located just west of Las Cruces. In its first years, the event was conceived and executed not as a public event, but as a more private neighborhood exchange. However, the tour generated so much interest as a private gathering, the group made the decision to establish the Art in the Garden tour as a public event open to all in 2011. Since then, it’s steadily gained steamed. This year, the tour returns from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 17, a great way to ring in the coming summer in the stunning exterior spaces of the Picacho Hills area surrounded by works created by some of the city’s most gifted craftspeople and artists. Eighteen artists will display in six beautiful gardens — three at each — who will be on hand to discuss their work and creative processes alongside several county master gardeners available to answer any plant and garden questions tourists may have. This year’s artists include Steve Bailey, Judy Bess, Greta Burger, Joyce Deaso, Sharon Cunningham, Cherie Gamboa, Marilyn Hansen, Mary Hayhoe, Peggy and Woody Hoffman, Dee Knudsen, Rosemary McKeown, Judi Miller, Jan Severson, Lori and Mike Shalett, Wanda Sparks and Mary Talamini, who will presents everything from jewelry, glass art, woodwork and knitted lace to painting, gourd art and sculpture. This group of Las Cruces artists — all migrants to the area, often after retirement, and whose artistic leanings remained undiscovered until their arrival to the Mesilla Valley — come from all over the county and from a wide variety of backgrounds — businessperson, travel agent, marina owner, accountant, systems analyst, et al — but all are joined in finding inspiration in their new homes in the Southwest. Each location participating in this year’s Art in the Garden tour of Picacho Hills will be marked with a red flag, and maps will be available at the commercial plaza, just after the Picacho Hills entrance.
