The stars are aligning for Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity (MVHH) next celebrity build day.
World-champion boxers and world-class musicians will be among the celebrities joining MVHH the event, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at 4174 Aurora Star Court in Las Cruces, said MVHH Development Coordinator April Estrada.
Boxing champion Austin Trout will be joined by mixed atrial arts (MMA) professional Randy McCarty, musicians Justin Kemp, Chris Baker and Tanner Huston, and Doña Ana County Deputy Sheriff Jamar Cotton.
Trout was WBA light middleweight champion. McCarty is an MMA professional fighter based in Las Cruces. Justin Kemp is a country music singer/songwriter from Hobbs, New Mexico who tours nationally and has opened for Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker and others. Baker and Huston are “up and coming singer/song writers from our local Las Cruces community,” Estrada said.
“Celebrity Build Day was established to give celebrities the opportunity to use their platform to showcase their partnership and support for Habitat for Humanity,” Estrada said. “This partnership also provides an opportunity for our organization to spread awareness about our mission on a larger scale. These celebrities come together to build homes, boost hope and brighten horizons!”
For safety reasons there will be a designated viewing area for anyone interested in attending Celebrity Build Day, Estrada said. Staff, volunteers and future MVHH homeowners will join the celebrities for the build. A groundbreaking for the houses they will be working on was held in October.
MVHH celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018. It has helped make homeowners of 116 local families during the past three decades. Qualifying homeowners are selected based on economic need, ability to pay their share of the costs and willingness to help with the construction. Every local family that qualifies for a MVHH house must contribute 300-500 hours of sweat equity helping to build their own home or someone else’s. Each participating family makes a small down payment on the house and pays a monthly long-term, low-interest mortgage. To qualify, families must have a steady source of income.
