High school football is here

Bulletin report

Sounds of bands keeping the beat, cheerleaders belting out witty rhymes and a raucous crowd hooting and hollering will fill the air for the next three months or so.

Yep, high school football season has returned.

Friday, Aug. 28 all the Las Cruces area schools start their seasons.

In town, at the Field of Dreams, cross-town programs Oñate and Centennial clash. Last year the Hawks thumped the Knights 42-10, but Oñate rebounded to qualify for the playoffs and finished the season 8-4.

The Hawks did not lose until Halloween and then came just short of a class 5A state title. Centennial finished with an 11-2 record.

Maxpreps.com ranks the Hawks as the 8th best team in the state while the Knights come in at No. 17.

The Mayfield Trojans, preseason ranked No. 4 in the state by MaxPreps, travels to Hobbs Friday. The Trojans finished 11-2 in 2014, including a heartbreaking, 33-31 loss to Rio Rancho in the state 6A title game.

The Trojans beat Hobbs in a high-scoring affair at home last year to the tune of 55-35. Hobbs is ranked No. 13 in the state.

Las Cruces High finished 6-6 last season, including a 1-1 record in the postseason. Ranked by MaxPreps as the No. 5 team in the state, the Bulldawgs head south across the state line to meet up with Montwood High (El Paso). Last year Las Cruces thumped Montwood 44-18.

The Mesilla Valley Christian Son Blazers struggled through a 2-8 campaign in 2014, with both victories coming on the road.

Still, the Son Blazers have a fresh start Friday against one of the two teams they beat last year, Anthony, Texas. MVCS topped Anthony 20-7 to start their season in 2014.

The Son Blazers play their home games at Oñate High, where they play host to Anthony.
