Las Cruces teams hunt for state title

Posted

Bulletin report

The regular season is over. Some teams have gone home and some will continue to shake a leg in the big dance.

High school football has moved on to its next phase, a win-or-go-home playoff bracket that could see multiple Las Cruces teams in title games.

Centennial High finished its regular season with an unblemished 10-0 record and snared the top seed in the Class 5A playoffs. The Hawks take a week off and then will face the winner of the Capital-Goddard firstround game. Mayfield High, meanwhile, lit up the scoreboard with a 56-27 victory against rival Las Cruces High to snare a district title. Still the Trojans (7-3) did not earn a bye for the first round of action and must play Atrisco Heritage Academy at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13 at home at the Field of Dreams. A victory would set up a showdown with Clovis.

The Bulldawgs (7-3) meanwhile also have a first-round home game as they play host to Cibola at 1 p.m., Saturday Nov. 14 at the Field of Dreams. An LCHS win will put the Bulldawgs into a quarterfinal showdown with Rio Rancho.

The Trojans and the Bulldawgs are on opposite sides of the 6A bracket, so a rematch is a possibility if both teams can keep winning.
