Bulletin report

The New Mexico State baseball team came up just short in the second game of the Rio Grande Rivalry Series against New Mexico, falling 3-2. The four-game series is now tied up at one game apiece.

This was a true pitcher’s duel as Dalton Shalberg faced only three over the minimum through the first three innings. UNM starter Luis Gonzalez only faced two over the minimum in the same span.

The Lobos broke the seal in the fourth as two runs came across in the frame. Both runs scored on a single through the right side. Steven Butts took over on the mound for the Aggies with one out and went two and a third innings without giving up a run.

The Aggies got on the board in the sixth as Daniel Johnson was hit by a pitch to reach first. Dan Hetzel doubled down the left line, moving Johnson to third. Austin Botello grounded out to first, but Johnson scored to cut the lead to 2-1.

NM State tied the game up in the seventh as Cameron Haskins doubled to left center. Brent Sakurai drove in Haskins with a base hit up the middle.

UNM retook the lead in the home half as a single to center brought home a run from third.

The Aggie bats went cold in the eighth and ninth as they went down in order in both innings.

The next game in the series between the in-state rivals is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 26 in Albuquerque. NM State plays host to UNM at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 3.

NM State is back in action as the team travels to Phoenix Friday to Sunday, April 8-10 to take on Grand Canyon in a three-game WAC series.
