Las Cruces Police are investigating the death of a 61-year-old man whose body was found in a city refuse truck the morning of Thursday, July 9.

Police were called to an area behind the Lowe’s supermarket, at 1404 Missouri Ave., shortly after 10:30 a.m. There, officers located the man’s body in the garbage truck hopper where solid waste is held for transport to a transfer station. The man appeared to have an injury to his head and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Preliminary information from the investigation leads detectives to believe the man was rummaging through a commercial trash bin behind the grocery store when the refuse truck arrived to collect the trash. The operator of the truck contacted police after he learned that a man may have been in the commercial bin when trash was dumped into the hopper.

Detectives are continuing their investigation but, at this time, no foul play is suspected.

The name of the man will not be released pending notification of next of kin.
