New Mexico voters can now track their absentee ballots

The deadline for New Mexico voters to request absentee ballots for the June 4 primary election is Tuesday, May 21. Starting with this election, voters can track their ballot’s progress after mailing or dropping them off.

The Secretary of State’s Office, which oversees elections, announced the launch of the Ballot Scout system, through which voters can check their ballot’s status and even opt in for text or email alerts verifying delivery and return status.

“With our new ballot tracking system we’ve improved upon our existing system by now offering more information to voters about where exactly their absentee ballot is in the mailing process, and giving voters the ability to sign up for email or text notifications so they always know the status of their mailed ballot,” Secretary Maggie Toulouse Oliver stated in a news release.

Absentee ballots are available to any qualified New Mexico voter. The ballots can be requested online at NMVote.org, which prompts registrants to confirm their identity with their New Mexico driver’s license or state ID number, the last four digits of their Social Security number and their date of birth. Next, the voter verifies registration information, chooses ballot delivery method and confirms their request for an absentee ballot.

To use the Ballot Scout system, the voter visits sos.nm.gov/trackmyballot online, enters their contact information exactly how it appears on their voter registration, and they can then track the status of their ballot with the option of being notified by email or on their mobile device.

To be counted, absentee ballots are due no later than 7 p.m. on June 4 (Election Day), mailed to the voter’s county clerk’s office or dropped off at any polling location or ballot drop box in the county.

For mailing, Toulouse Oliver’s office recommended mailing 7 to 10 days ahead of June 4 to ensure timely delivery.
