The women of the Doña Ana County Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) describe themselves as “a group of women with a passion to learn about their personal history and an eagerness to embrace the qualities of their ancestors who fought to create the United States of America.”
During 2019, the Doña Ana County Chapter collected and donated purses and shoes to Las Cruces' battered women's shelter, La Casa; purchased 250 Christmas wreaths to honor American veterans' graves at the Fort Bayard National Cemetery; provided layettes for soldiers at Holloman Air Force base with newborn babies; and collected blankets, towels, toiletry items, cleaning supplies, bus fare and Christmas gifts for all veterans at the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope.
In addition, the chapter facilitated annual school-essay contests focusing on American history, presented Good Citizen Awards for high-school students who exhibit the qualities DAR promotes, and participated in various parades and memorial ceremonies.
DAR is a national women’s service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, patriotism and honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War.
To join DAR, women must be 18 or older and able to trace their descendance from a man or woman in the American Revolution.
