Bulletin report

Statewide, the Democratic Party won back control of the state House of Representatives.

In the Las Cruces/Doña Ana County area, Democrat candidates also did well.

Former Las Cruces City Councillor Nathan Small knocked off incumbent Andy Nuñez in District 36 and, on her third attempt, Joanne Ferrary beat Terry McMillan for the District 37 seat.

Ferrary said she is “looking forward to making up for the last time” of those last four years,” and said she will focus on education, health care and the environment in the House.

“We have a great southern New Mexico representation (in the New Mexico House of Representatives) that will help turn the tide for New Mexico,” she said.

In the House, Ferrary said she will seek seats on committees dealing with education, health care and labor to help grow jobs and project the environment. Ferrary said she also plans to serve on three or four interim committees of the House “to hear what the concerns are so that people have a voice.”

Education, Ferrary said, is the single most important issue facing the state, and “making sure our kids are going to be successful from cradle to career.”

Bill McCamley defended his District 33 seat against Republican Neal Hooks while first-time candidate Angelica Rubio beat Joseph Bishop for the open District 35 seat.

Ricky Little and John Zimmerman carried the banner for local Republicans with victories in the District 39 and District 53 races respectively.

Democrat Doreen Gallegos ran unopposed in District 52 and Bealquin “Bill” Gomez did as well in District 34.
