"Get Up, Get Out and Dance!" is the theme of this year’s annual Spring Recital at the Las Cruces Academy of Music & Dance (AMAD), 1809 El Paseo Road.
The event will be a bit less restrictive than last year’s recital, during which families had to see their dancer perform through a glass wall, said AMAD Owner Leslie Kowalski.
"Our studio location has a nice shady courtyard of concrete and grass,” Kowalski said. “Surveying the space, our staff decided to turn the walk-way into a long, narrow stage. I was able to obtain a Marley Dance Floor from the Doña Ana Arts Council via Alma d’arte Charter High School," she said.
With the help of some of the dance and music parents, the floor has been installed and dancers have been rehearsing outside.
“I love this floor and this setting! I’m super excited for the dancers!” said long-time AMAD instructor Miss Olivia.
During the recital, “matching clear face shields will be worn by the dancers so that parents can see the smiling faces atop the sparkly costumes,” Kowalski said.
Each family is allowed four audience members who will bring their own lawn chairs and sit in family “pods” in front of their special dancer. To keep the gatherings small, AMAD will host three different free recitals for small groups at 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10, 11 and 12, Kowalski said.
Summer Dance will begin at AMAD in early June and run through July, she said. New and continuing dancers may participate live or via Zoom.
“We are a small studio that gives extra attention to each and every dancer, ages 2.5-teen,” Kowalski said.
