ACTion Programs for Animals awarded $15,000 for P.A.W.S. training program

The Carroll Petrie Foundation (CPF) awarded $15,000 to ACTion Programs for Animals (APA) of Las Cruces to support its Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success (P.A.W.S.) training program.

APA will be able to continue P.A.W.S. thanks to the grant, APA Executive Director Michel Meunier said.

“The P.A.W.S. program is a win-win, as it benefits the prisoners, while resulting in well-trained dogs,” Meunier said. “APA is appreciative of CPF’s generous grant that will ensure future success of this program.”

APA took over administration of P.A.W.S. in 2016 in partnership with the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility. Inmates train shelter dogs in basic obedience and potty training to ready them for their forever homes. APA has sent hundreds of dogs to this program for rehabilitation and training, Animal adopters often specifically request dogs that are graduates of this program. APA is able to save many more dogs from the shelter, especially larger ones, because of this successful program.

Find your next dog or cat at APA’s adoption center, located at 537 N. Solano Drive. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday or by appointment.

APA is a progressive animal welfare organization seeking to improve the quality of life for companion animals in Doña Ana County and reduce the number of unwanted animals impounded and euthanized at the municipal shelter. Since May 2012, more than 5,300 animals have been rescued. The majority of these have been dogs and cats/kittens pulled from the municipal shelter. APA is able to do this through volunteer work of rescue/foster coordinators, foster families, weekend adoptions and donations.

CPF, established in New York City in 1996, “is a family foundation dedicated to the well-being of all animals and the natural world,” according to www.carrollpetrie.org.
