MARIACHI LAS MUÑECAS

All girl mariachi group keeps plugging along

A popular local mariachi group, Las Muñecas, often pitches in to support nonprofit endeavors.

The five teens played curbside serenata as folks picked up their Angel Tree gifts before Christmas.

“Every year, the girls do volunteer activities,” said group organizer Elena Hinderlich.

The group, comprised of high school seniors, started four years ago. Daniela Robinson started mariachi in middle school and fell in love with it. She and her mother, Henderlich, came up the idea to start their own all-girl group.

“I think that is so beautiful,” Hinderlich said. “Mariachi is not typically a female-only thing.”

Since its formation Las Muñecas has had four to nine members. Right now, it’s five. In addition to Robinson, who plays guitarrón, there are Paola Hernandez on violin, Khalila Gilbert on trumpet, Samara Nuñez on trumpet and Jasmin Saucedo on vihuela.

“We have five girls who are very good students,” Hinderlich said. “They have goals.”

The group has played at the governor’s mansion, the Latino Farmers National Association convention, weddings in Roswell and other small backyard weddings in the area. On Valentine’s day, they provided serenades in 2020 and will do so again in the future.

“Mariachi music is so versatile, its really for everyone,” she said. “These girls have a talent and gift for entertaining. The old music tells a story that brings back memories. It’s very flexible and can work for many occasions.”

Although the girls are graduating, they intend to keep the group together. Prior to the pandemic, they were active attending conferences, playing, competing and meeting other young people.

The group has a large selection of many types of songs. Hinderlich said they are lucky to have two music instructors and rehearsal space at Downtown Desert Yoga, where there is plenty of space to maintain social distance.

Hinderlich said the group is open to more members, and they are happy to audition potential players.

“The way the world is divided, we feel the music unites,” she said. “It has blossomed into something magical – the happiness it brings people. We are hoping by spring things clear up a little. We are hoping for Valentine’s Day serenades. We surprise people, and they start laughing and crying. It’s sneaky but fun.
