Animal Services Center receives $50,000 grant from Petco Love

The Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV) received a $50,000 grant from the national nonprofit Petco Love in July, ASCMV said in a news release.

The grant was presented to support ASCMV’s “lifesaving work for animals in Doña Ana County,” the news release said. ASCMV Executive Director Clint Thacker and grant writer Elaine Stachera Simon accepted the grant check, which was presented by Petco of Las Cruces General Manager Oscar Armenta and sales associate Kate Walker.

ASCMV, 3551 Bataan Memorial West, is jointly operated by the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.

“Petco Love’s investment is helping us work in the community in a proactive way to raise the level of animal welfare in communities with populations that are lower income and underrepresented,” said Thacker. “By helping people help animals – their own animals and the community cats they care for – both animals and people benefit.”

Since its founding in 1999, Petco Love has invested $330 million in animal welfare programs across the country. It has helped find homes for more than 6.5 million pets in partnership with ASCMV and more than 4,000 organizations like it nationwide.

“Our investment in ASCMV is part of more than $15 million in investments recently announced by Petco Love to power local organizations across the country as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized,” said Petco Love President Susanne Kogut. “We recently celebrated the one-year launch anniversary of Petco Love Lost, a national lost and found database that uses pet facial recognition technology to simplify the search for lost pets.”

ASCMV opened in 1985 and was operated by a third-party contractor until 2008, when shelter management was transferred to the city and county via a joint powers agreement. On average, 9,000-10,000 animals are brought to ASCMV each year by city and county animal control officers and the public.
