Applications now being accepted for police academy

The Las Cruces Police Department is now accepting applications for its 51st training academy, tentatively set to begin in January 2022, LCPD said in an April 5 news release.

 Applications for Police Cadet must be received no later than July 4, 2021.

 The starting salary for police cadets who are accepted into the academy is $16.50 an hour, the news release said. Upon graduation from the 22-week academy, officer trainees receive $18.83 an hour, which increases to $22.94 an hour when then successfully complete one-year probationary status.

 LCPD also offers a $4,000 recruitment and retention bonus that is guaranteed with a 36-month commitment to LCPD.

 Applicants are required to be U.S. citizens, at least 19 years old when the academy begins, have at least a high school diploma and have no felony convictions.
