Artist Daphne Wirthlin featured in Arts Council’s July show

Las Cruces artist Daphne Wirthlin will be the featured artist in the Doña Ana Council’s (DAAC) July show at the DAAC Arts and Cultural Center, 840 Calle de Mercado in Bulletin Plaza.

The show will begin Monday, July 6, and continue through Friday, July 31.

A long-time photographer and lover of the arts, Wirthlin became an artist when she found herself with a can of left-over house paint.

A native of Staffordshire, England, Wirthlin was given a Brownie camera at age 9 while living with her parents and twin brother in India (Wirthlin’s father worked for Shell Oil Company, and the family traveled around the world, also living in Venezuela and Mazatlán, Mexico, where he was consul.)

“I ran all over the place taking photographs when I was a kid,” Wirthlin said.

She said she also was a diver and swimmer, participated in ballet and became a runner.

Wirthlin was also an actress in Canada working in theatre, film, radio, dubbing and television for 18 years. Before moving to New Mexico, she lived with her husband, Gene, a longshoreman, on the Columbia River in a sizeable floating home they designed together.

In 1996, they moved to the southwest, and it was in Las Cruces that sne started to paint, inspired by the wildlife around her. In her work as a wildlife/nature painter, she uses her bird and animal photographs whenever possible.

Wirthlin’s art has been featured throughout the region, including The Main Street and Glen Cutter galleries in Las Cruces and the Hal Marcus Gallery in El Paso. She won first place in the juried Sweets show at Studio54@70 Gallery in Tularosa for her painting “Bon-Bons and Petit-Fours.”

Her work was also on display at Las Cruces City Hall for a year, and her piece titled “Songbirds and Soundbytes” was featured in the Southern New Mexico/El Paso juried exhibition at the Preston Contemporary Art Center. The University Medical Center in El Paso has nine of her pieces on permanent display.

DAAC is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call 575-523-6403 and visit www.daarts.org and daphnewirthlinart.com.
