LUMINARIAS: A DOWNTOWN HOLIDAY MEMORY PROJECT

Arts and Cultural District seeks storytellers

The Las Cruces Arts and Cultural District (ACD) is asking the Las Cruces community to share holiday memories of Downtown Las Cruces as part of “Luminarias: A Downtown Holiday Memory Project.”

Stories submitted will be used to create digital luminarias of collective memories to be showcased online in time for the holidays, ACD said in a news release.

Memories, including one photo, must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, to be considered. Participation is limited to the first 30 qualifying submissions.

“There are so many memories of the holiday season in our historic district – Las Posadas, Los Pastores, midnight mass and Matachines dances at St. Genevieve’s Downtown, Christmas lights on Main Street – just to name a few images of the cultural environment of our neighborhood,” said Irene Oliver-Lewis, a longtime resident of the Mesquite Street Historic District and an ACD founder. “I encourage people of all ages to share their stories with us.”

Storytellers with memories of home and family holiday celebrations are also encouraged to submit entries, ACD said.

Stories, in English or Spanish, must be written in 500 words or less and have a corresponding photograph.

The ACD’s boundaries are Water Street on the west, Mesquite Street on the east, Picacho Avenue/Spruce Street on the north and Amador Avenue on the south. This area includes Las Cruces’ 1849 original townsite of Main Street/Downtown and the Mesquite Street Historic District.

The ACD was created by the Las Cruces City Council in 2018 “to highlight our history, honor our culture, promote our arts and engage our whole community,” said Greg Smith, who was then a member of the city council and is now president of the ACD Coordinating Council and executive director of the Doña Ana Arts Council.

ACD is part of Downtown Las Cruces Partnership.
