Arts council to kick off second 50 years with return of Arts Fair this weekend

The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) is kicking off its second 50 years with a return of the Las Cruces Arts Fair after a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, DAAC Executive Director Greg Smith said in a news release.

The Arts Fair will be open 10 a.m to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.

The 11th Arts Fair, at the Las Cruces Convention Center, 680 E. University Ave., will continue the DAAC tradition begun in 2010 at the urging of Sally and Glenn Cutter, Smith said.

Tickets are $10, with children under age 12 admitted free.

“Many familiar artists and some new ones will be part of the event this year, with booths situated in the main concourse and exhibit hall of the convention center,” he said.

“This juried show is an opportunity for artists, collectors and appreciators of art to participate in an affirmation of the importance of art in our creative economy here,” Smith said.

Thousands have come to the event each of the 10 previous fairs, and Smith said he expects the convention center to be a safe environment for that to happen again this year in early March.

DAAC supports and promotes the arts as both part of a thriving creative economy and a source of community pride. DAAC board meetings are held the fourth Thursday of most months.
