ARTIST REBECCA COURTNEY

As ‘Majestic Kid’ prepares to open, Black Box to auction artwork

Posted

Las Cruces artist Rebecca Courtney has painted a portrait of Tony-winning playwright Mark Medoff that she has donated to Black Box Theatre (BBT) “as a fundraiser to support the continuation of theater in Las Cruces.”

BBT co-owner Ceil Herman said the painting is featured in BBT’s thetheatregallery, in the theatre lobby at 430 N. Main St. downtown. The painting will be auctioned online. The winning bid will be announced in November, when “The Majestic Kid” -- written by Medoff and published in 1986 -- concludes its run at BBT.

The play, now in rehearsal (following all state safety health guidelines), streams Nov. 6-29.

Courtney’s painting of Medoff is called "Alter Ego," the artist said. “In my mind, Mark Medoff secretly wanted to be The Majestic Kid, so this painting reflects what he would look like in a Tom Mix movie in the1930's – a classic cowboy hero wearing a white hat and ready to rope cattle and defend the beautiful heroine.”

The painting is 22 by 28 inches and is acrylic.

Herman said proceeds from the sale of the painting will help to offset BBT “expenses during the COVID19 pandemic.”

Courtney’s painting is part of thetheatregallery’s "Art and Drama: A Tribute to Mark Medoff" exhibition that continues through October and November, with a number of works dedicated to Medoff (1940-2019), who won the Tony award for best play of 1980 for “Children of a Lesser God.”

Other artists participating in the show are Margaret Bernstein, Michael Cook, Kathleen Deasy, June Decker, Bob Diven, Flo Dougherty, Penny Dunklee, Rosemary McLaughlin, Marjorie Moser, Cheryl Nelson and Ilene Steele.
