DOÑA ANA PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

‘Backyard Wheel’ is local photography club’s photo of the year

Posted

The Doña Ana Photography Club (DAPC) recently announced the winners of the club’s 10th annual juried Photograph of the Year (POY) competition. “Backyard Wheel” by Bill Hanson took top honors out of 66 member entries.

Hanson’s otherworldly photo combines 180 night-sky exposures to create the trace of light shed by stars as they transit the New Mexican sky over his backyard. Of his photo, which shows technical skill and patience, Hanson says, “Beauty can be found everywhere, even in our backyards.”

Showing beauty, or truth, through the medium of a camera is what the members of the DAPC aim to do.

The club’s annual POY competition gives members an opportunity to share their best recent captures and get feedback through the judge’s awards and commentary. As DAPC President Dale Taylor says, “The photo of the year competition is the crowning event of DAPC year. We always have many contestants, and the event brings out their best work. Results are always eagerly awaited!”

Entries are by class and category. Class A is open to previous POY ribbon winners and Class B is for all others. Class A categories are monochrome and color; Class B categories are combined.

Bill Hanson’s POY photo was Best in Class A, Color. Other Best in Class awards also went to Seth Madell for “Ansel and Me,” Class A, Monochrome; and Marc Christensen for “Vastness,” Class B.

Other awardees were:

Class A, Monochrome, blue ribbon: Dave Brown and Patrick Straight.

Three professional photographers comprised the judging panel: Bill Boone is the owner of Atlanta, Georgia-based Coast to Coast Photo; E. Gary Gunn of TopGum Photography is a New Mexico-based freelance photographer; and Kathleen Walker is a local photographer.

DAPC, founded in 1955, provides education, inspiration and a social network for photographers and photography enthusiasts in Doña Ana County and surrounding areas.
