BLACK BOX THEATRE

Black Box Theatre presents ‘A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking’

Posted

"A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking" by John Ford Noonan opens Friday, Aug. 6 at Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Main St. downtown.

The play stars Karen Buerdsell and Gina DeMondo and is directed by Robert “Bobcat” Young.

This two-character comedy takes place in the kitchen of Maude Mix in the fictional town of Fox Hollow in secluded northern Westchester County, New York. Maude “is having a tough day,” according to books.google.com. “Her husband is off on a weekend spree with his secretary and she can’t get rid of the pesky neighbor who has just moved in from Texas. Hanna Mae Bindler badgers Maude into friendship and the two eventually join forces against their errant and erring husbands.”

“This is a fun play,” Young said. “I was really excited when I read it. Then I was asked to direct it. And what a great play and cast to work with! When we started rehearsing, so much more came out of the writing. Discovering the hidden agendas and their lives. We really laughed so much in the first month of rehearsing. I hope the audience loves it as much as we did pulling it all together.”

This is Young’s directorial debut. Young’s past participation in arts and theater has included Middle East dancing, drag and comedy. Young also has done theater costuming since 1982 and has acted in several BBT and Las Cruces Community Theatre productions.

Noonan (1941-2018) wrote the play in 1979. It had more than 800 off-Broadway performances, starring Susan Sarandon and Eileen Brenan.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Aug. 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21; 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Aug. 15 and 22; and 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19.

Tickets are $15 regular admission, $12 students and seniors over age 65 and $10 for the Thursday, Aug. 19  performance only.

It’s Gilbert and Sullivan Aug. 8 at Black Box Theatre

Bulletin report

The Gilbert & Sullivan Company of El Paso (GSCEP) will perform “H.M.S. Pinafore” at 2:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at Black Box Theatre (BBT), 430 N. Main St. in downtown Las Cruces.

Tickets are $10 to $15.

Reservations can be made by calling BBT at 575-523-1223 or online at no-strings.org.

You can also call GSCEP at 915-479-2485 and visit gselpaso.org.

“This fanciful comedy is one of the most beloved and delightful of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas,” BBT said in a news release. The musical, which premiered in London in May 1878, “is a cheerful satire on the arrival of the modernity, bureaucracy and democratic ideals to the Royal Navy of Queen Victoria’s era and pokes fun at the Royal Navy, parliamentary politics and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority.”

GSCEP was founded by the late Joan Quarm in 1969. The company relies on ticket sales for the majority of its operating revenues and also receives support from the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
