BLANK CONVERSATIONS THEATRE

Blank Conversations troupe returns with live plays

Posted

Blank Conversations Theatre Company of Las Cruces returns to the stage in July with a special engagement at Rio Grande Theatre (RGT), 211 N. Main St., company founder Gus David Sanchez said in a news release.
It will perform “The Mad Ones” by Bree Lowdermilk and Kait Kerrigan at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, July 2-3, 9-10 and 16-17, and at 2 p.m. Sundays, July 11 and 18. The July 2 opening night performance marks the re-opening of Rio Grande Theatre.
It will perform “The Complete History of America (Abridged)” by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, July 7, 14, 21 and 28.
Tickets for “Mad Ones” are $15. Tickets for “History of America” are $10. “The Mad Ones” is a 90-minute musical that tells the story of Samantha Brown, who is stuck in a car and stuck between her desire to explore the unknown and to meet the expectations of reality. It features Sam’s mother, Sam’s boyfriend and her deceased, best friend, Kelly. The production is co-directed by Xodia Choate and Victoria Cox and stars Cox, Peyton Womble, Bryan Berard and Della Bustamante.
Similar to their production of “The Last Five Years”, Blank Conversations’ production of “The Mad Ones” was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, reaching its goal of $2,600 in 30 days, Sanchez said.
“Once the pandemic hit, theater was heavily impacted,” said Peyton Womble, who produced the show and is one of its cast members. “We did our best to keep the company up and running and we are so thankful for the support that was shown throughout that year and a half. When the idea of ‘The Mad Ones’ was brought to us, we knew this was something we wanted to get out there once the world began to heal. ‘The Mad Ones’ is not only one of the first projects we are doing live again, it’s also the biggest project we’ve taken on as a company.”
“The Complete History of America (Abridged)”, finds a three-piece troupe (played by Alyssa Gose, Collin Duffey and Brianna Horvath) attempting to present more than 500 years of American history in 100 minutes. The show is a mix of slapstick, improv and prop comedy. “The ‘abridged’ plays are treasures of the American theatre scene, and ‘History of America’ is one that is just ripe for the return to live performance,” said Eva Cullen. “600 years in 6,000 seconds. It’s dumb-fun you can sink into for a Wednesday evening.”

Sanchez and Cullen cofounded Blank Conversations in 2019. Berard and Womble are also charter members.
