Book club welcomes ‘Chasing the Thrill’ author in Jan. 27 Zoom

The Mesilla Valley Readers of Southern New Mexico (MVRSNM) book club will host “Chasing the Thrill” author Daniel Barbarisi in a Zoom presentation, 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022.

“Chasing the Thrill” is Barbarisi’s take on the treasure hunt created 2010 by real-life Santa Fe art dealer Forrest Fenn (1930-2020).

“When Forrest Fenn was given a fatal cancer diagnosis (1988), he came up with a bold plan: He would hide a chest full of jewels and gold in the wilderness and publish a poem that would serve as a map leading to the treasure’s secret location,” Barbarisi said on his website (www.danielbarbarisi.com). “But he didn't die (then), and after hiding the treasure in 2010, Fenn instead presided over a decade-long gold rush that saw many thousands of treasure hunters scrambling across the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of his fortune.”

Fenn died in 2020 at the age of 90 of apparent natural causes, according to CNN.

Barbarisi first learned about Fenn’s treasure hunt in 2017, when a friend became consumed with decoding the poem and convinced Barbarisi, a reporter, to document his search, according to the website.

During his MVRSNM presentation, Barbarisi will discuss what began as an attempt to capture the inner workings of the hunt for Fenn’s treasure, said Charlotte Zimmerman of MVRSNM. His book was published in May 2021.
