City minimum wage increase took effect Jan. 1

Posted

The City of Las Cruces minimum wage increased to $11.50 an hour Jan. 1, 2022, the city said in a news release. The increase follows the state minimum wage.

That is an increase of $1 per hour from the city’s 2021 minimum wage of $10.50. It was $9 an hour in 2020.

The hourly wage for tipped employees increased to $4.60 an hour for 2022, the city said. That is an increase of 40 cents an hour over 2021.

A tipped employee is an employee who customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a week in tips.

The Las Cruces City Council accepted the state’s graduated minimum wage increases in September 2020. However, the council opted to retain the city’s own ordinance regarding tipped wages. According to the Las Cruces Municipal Code, the minimum wage for tipped employees increases to an amount equal to 40 percent of the hourly wage.

Business owners please take note that the annual Business Registration fee returns to $35 in 2022.
