City Museum of Art celebrates National Arts & Humanities Month

The Las Cruces Museum of Art (MOA) will host several virtual and in-person programs during October to celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month.

Here is the schedule of events:

  • Friday, Oct. 1, 4-6 p.m., via Zoom: “From the Ground Up Artist Talk.” Join MOA for a virtual discussion with some of the artists featured in the “From the Ground Up XXX: Regional Juried Ceramics Exhibition” to learn about the artists’ work and ask them questions. The exhibition is on display at MOA until Saturday, Oct. 9. The Zoom link is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83107772784. The password is 765522.
  • Saturday, Oct. 16, 2-4 p.m., in person: “Painting on Silk” workshop with local artist Judy Licht. This workshop about painting on silk with dyes is for ages 12 and up and registration is required. Space is limited. No previous art experience is required. Supplies will be provided. Register in person at the Las Cruces Museum of Nature Science (MNS, 411 N. Main St.) atrium desk.
  • Friday, Oct. 22, 1:3 p.m., via Zoom: “Talk with a Curator,” featuring Huntington Museum of Art (Huntington, West Virginia) senior curator and exhibition designer John Farley. Farley will provide insights about the Near Eastern Collection, a portion of which is featured in the traveling exhibition “Allure of the Near East: Treasures of the Huntington Museum of Art.” The exhibition will be on display at MOA Oct. 29-Jan. 22, 2022. The Near Eastern Collection includes art objects from the Middle East, Ottoman Turkey, the central Asian republics, the Indian sub-continent, North Africa and Moorish Spain and includes pre-Roman, Roman, Greek, Islamic, Christian and Jewish civilizations.
  • Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 27-29, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: “Let’s Break Some Plates (Pique Assiette)” with Susan Polka three-day workshop. Discover how to transform bits and pieces of broken dishware and pottery into beautiful mosaics with local artist Susan Polka. This program is for adults ages 18 and up and registration is required. Space is very limited. No previous art experience is required. Supplies will be provided. Register in-person at MNS.

MOA, 491 N. Main St. Downtown, is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 36.
