City of Las Cruces hosts first virtual groundbreaking ceremony for construction of Fire Station

Posted

In keeping with safe distancing practices as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Las Cruces is hosting its first virtual groundbreaking in the community set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24. The virtual groundbreaking will be live streamed on the City of Las Cruces Facebook Page @CityofLasCrucesYoutube.com/clctv20 and Comcast cable channel 20.

“We are excited to present this to the community and it’s the next best thing to actually being on site,” said Jamey Rickman, Community Engagement manager. “We invite everyone in the community to join us in celebrating the building the new fire station in City Council District 4. This is a first for us, but it’s a very inclusive event that everyone will be able to view.”

Fire Station 3, located at 390 N. Valley Drive, was built in 1967, and provides fire protection and emergency medical services to West Las Cruces. The district is comprised of residential neighborhoods, industrial parks, motels and interstate highway. Station 3 is also responsible for testing the department's ground ladders.

The groundbreaking event features Mayor Ken Miyagishima, District 4 City Councilor Johana Bencomo, Interim Fire Chief Jason Smith and members of Fire Station 3, while narrator Jennifer Martinez, Communications Office, media relations specialist, walks viewers through the presentation, which also includes an overview of the project, an architectural rendering of the new modern facility, and other visuals.

The Fire Station 3 project was approved by voters in the City’s General Obligation (GO) Bond special election in 2018. The cost of the Fire Station is estimated at $6.2 million out of a total of $35.6 million GO Bond. Other projects in the GO Bond include the Animal Services Center of Mesilla Valley, and improvements to recreational facilities, parks and trails.

Although construction officially started January 20, 2021, community members can see the construction progressing now with the development of building pad and footings plus utilities work underway. The estimated completion date for the project is around January 20, 2022.
