Comcast lift zones designed to improve Internet access

Posted

Comcast has created nearly 50 lift zone locations across New Mexico, including 11 in Las Cruces, The Garrity Group Public Relations of Albuquerque said in an April 18 news release. Comcast New Mexico is one of Garrity Group’s clients.

Students and adults can stop into a lift zone facility and connect their personal device to the free, public access Wi-Fi network, the news release said. Through Comcast funding, many lift zones receive laptops and other smart devices.

The lift zone sites in Las Cruces are at: A. Fielder Memorial Safe Haven, 906 N. Tornillo St.; Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Cruces, 330 W. Las Cruces Ave.; Doña Ana Community Center, 5745 Ladesma Drive; Eastside Senior Community Center, 310 N. Tornillo St.; Henry Benavidez Community Center, 1045 McClure Road;

Juvenile Citation Program & Learning Center, 890 N. Tornillo St.; Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center, 1401 E. Hadley Ave.; Meerscheidt Recreational Center, 1600 E. Hadley Ave.; Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, 999 W. Amador Ave.; Munson Community Center, 975 S. Mesquite St.; and Safe Café Teen Center, 6121 Reynolds Drive.

“The Comcast Lift Zone has been well-received at Community of Hope,” said MVCH Executive Director Nicole Martinez. “Clients now have access to Wi-Fi afterhours on their devices, and it helps people feel connected and access resources they need when our doors are not open.”

Comcast said lift zones complement Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which the company began in 2011, helping connect almost 300,000 low-income residents in the state to home Internet, the news release said. Through the federal Affordable Connectivity Program, Comcast said it makes it even easier for those with low incomes to connect to the Internet.

Comcast Corporation is principally focused on broadband, aggregation and streaming services and has 57 million customers in the United States and Europe. Comcast was listed as the United States’ largest media conglomerate in the 2021 Forbes Global 2000 list in terms of revenue. Now headquartered in Philadelphia, it was founded in 1963 when Ralph J. Roberts (1920-2015) and two partners bought American Cable Systems, a cable television company based in Tupelo, Mississippi. It was incorporated in 1969 as Comcast Corporation. Roberts coined the name “Comcast,” combining parts of the words “communications” and “broadcasting.”
