GREEN COOL PAINT BICYCLE

Cool Green Bike Lanes

Posted

An exciting new project is coming to Las Cruces!

Green Cool Paint* Bicycle Lanes will be installed within existing bicycle lanes to lower surface temperatures by reflecting more of the sun’s energy to produce cooler surface temperatures on the asphalt and to better indicate bicycle lanes for motorists and bicyclists. The locations of these green bicycle lanes are as follows:

  • East Hadley Avenue, from north Solano Drive to north Walnut Street.
  • South Walnut Street, from Nevada Avenue to the end of permanent bike lanes north of Sambrano Avenue.
  • Nevada Avenue, from south Walnut to Triviz Drive.

From July 2021 through August 2021, temporary bike lanes in Las Cruces were installed on Nevada Avenue, from south Walnut Street to south Triviz Drive, and portions of south Walnut, south of Nevada, and Idaho Avenue, from south Walnut to Lees Drive.

This project included temporary green paint applied within bike lanes at intersections and driveways. Surveys conducted during the temporary bike project indicated strong support for green bike lanes to make them more noticeable to both motorists and bicyclists.

As a result, this project is a permanent response to the popularity of green bike lanes. In this permanent version, we have added a special feature to increase your safety and comfort by reducing surface temperatures using green cool paint.

The City wants to prioritize biker’s safety and comfort as the lanes get utilized for transportation or exercising purposes. We encourage you to check out both portions of green “cool” bike lanes. The installation will take place July 13, 2022 to July 14, 2022, as weather allows.

We hope through this project the community is encouraged to hop on their bikes, take a ride, and let us know what you think!
