Film festival goes live, features intimate, personal films

After two years of introspection, filmmakers have put the Covid experience to work for them by addressing some very emotional but widespread issues. As filmmaker Kati Boland said, she developed her script for “We Are All in This Together,” with the belief that something this personal is universal is not the only film in the Las Cruces International Film Festival exploring the idea that personal stories can connect with a vast audience. Many of the participants have chosen the same theme.

Executive director of the festival, Ross Marks, said because of Covid, everyone became isolated and alone in their own ways.

“Communal challenges became internal challenges,” he said. “We were turning to ourselves for reflection, value and meaning. All these scripts and stories are really Covid stories. They came out of that period of time and that was about Covid and isolation and turning inward.”

Saturday will be an exciting day for the festival, Marks said. With a variety of different things happening in the festival.

“I’m always excited about the 48 hours film contest; we had 60 to 70 team this year,” he said. “The films will be screening in two theaters, and the winners get cash.”

Also happening on Saturday, Marks said, there will be an open casting call for Las Cruces. Anyone interested in being in the Film Las Cruces data base can attend and get screen tests.

Finally, Saturday evening the awards ceremony is set to happen at the Rio Grande Theater Downtown. All the other events for the festival occur at the Allen Theaters Cineplex at the mall. On Sunday, all the winning films will be shown.

“Things are going really well this year,” Marks said.  “Our ticket sales are highest they have ever been in 7 years. People ready to get out and participate in things.

The Las Cruces International Film Festival is taking place March 2-6, live and in-person at the Allen Theatres Cineport. Tickets are available at www.lascrucesfilmfest.com.
