Global seismologist links Earth’s surface and interior in city museum’s Science Café

Posted

The Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science and Sigma Xi are sponsoring “Science Café – Linking the Dynamics and Composition of Earth’s Interior to Surface Processes” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17 via Zoom.

The event will include guest speaker Lauren Waszek, Ph.D., a global seismologist currently lecturing in physics at James Cook University through an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award fellowship. Waszek is a professor in the New Mexico State University Department of Physics.

Seismology is the only tool to observe Earth’s interior, using energy from earthquakes to make detailed detections, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release about the event. Waszek’s presentation will inform listeners about the relationship between seismic features in Earth’s upper- and mid-mantle and its temperature and composition, and the resultant geodynamical influence for volcanism on Earth’s surface.
