Gospel Recue Missions seeks donations on #GiveFromHomeDay

Posted

The Las Cruces Gospel Rescue Mission (GRM) is taking part in #GiveFromHomeDay on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Executive Director Henry Young said today.

“The national fundraising drive puts the power of giving into the hands of Americans who are anxious to help neighbors and strangers alike who struggle with the economic and health impacts of the new coronavirus (COVID-19),” Young said in a news release.

With people out of work, small businesses closed, schools shut down, and seniors more isolated than ever, the concept of helping our neighbors and communities has been brought to the forefront of social conversation.

At the same time, GRM and other nonprofits have experienced “a sudden and deep drop in funding as events have been canceled and the attention of loyal donors has been pulled away to other urgent personal concerns, Young said. “Additionally, our business social enterprises like our Thrift Store (which provides about 20 percent of GRM’s income), are also temporarily closed.

And, people who rely on GRM are in need of its services now more than ever during the public health crisis, he said. And, the number of new people being served is growing every day.

“Regardless of the pandemic, poverty and hunger in our community has not gone away,” Young said. “Funding is urgently needed to continue so GRM can prepare and serve three meals a day for the poor and homeless; provide shelter and support for people voluntarily quarantined at GRM; maintaining GRM’s small staff of minimum-wage employees, including cooks, a driver, shelter supervisors and maintenance workers.

GRM receives no tax dollars to run its operations, he said.

GRM is a faith-based nonprofit founded in 1972.
