Helping others in need during the 2020 holiday season

First in a series.

“At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and Destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?”

So said a wise man said in Charles Dickens’ December 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas,”

During the next several weeks, The Bulletin will present information on ways you can help those in need in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County during the holiday season. And remember, every donation helps; no gift of money, time or supplies is too small.

  • U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots of Doña Ana County collects new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls ages birth to 14 in more than 150 donation boxes countywide. It hopes to provide toys to 5,000 needy children in 2020. Especially needed are soccer balls, basketballs, games and other toys for children age 8 and older. The program provided 10,543 toys, books and stocking stuffers to 4,813 children in 2019. “With COVID-19, more families are in need, not all businesses with collection boxes are open or seeing the traffic they’ve seen before,” Groth said. “We need help from the community.”
