Las Cruces Home Builders Association: Showcase of Homes starts Sept. 17; Build My Future is Oct. 6; Casa for Cause under construction

The Las Cruces Home Builders Association’s (LCHBA) 48th annual Showcase of Homes will be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 17-19 and 24-26. Hours are Fridays, 4 to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. A twilight tour is 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24.

A total of 11 homes will be on this year’s tour, LCHBA Executive Officer Nicole Black said. That’s about half the usual number because homes are selling so quickly, she said. Currently, about 95 percent of the homes built by LCHBA-member contractors are pre-sold, Black said.

And even though the industry is booming, Black said, shortages of labor and supplies, especially lumber, also have contributed to fewer homes being built.

This year’s showcase celebrity judges are: Las Cruces Association of Realtors CEO Erica Mosher; KFOX 14/CBS 4 reporter Salina Madrid; Hot 103 Radio on-air personality Joseph Hernandez; City of Las Cruces Economic Development specialist Donald Bustos; and Adams Radio Group Program Director Jackie Marquez-Wilkinson.

The 2021 showcase is dedicated to the memory of LCHBA Vice President Tyson Brown, who died suddenly Aug. 3, Black said. Brown joined LCHBA’s board of directors in 2019 and became vice president earlier this year. The Tyson Brown Memorial Fund has been set up at First New Mexico Bank to benefit Brown’s wife and two children, Black said.

Casa for a Cause

A labor and supply shortage has delayed construction of LCHBA’s 2021 Casa for a Cause fundraiser, Black said. The association broke ground on the home April 13 and expected to complete it in mid-September. That’s been pushed back to late November, Black said.

Adam Juarez’s A New Beginning Custom Homes is the project’s lead contractor.

With assistance from LCHBA, subcontractors and other donors, Juarez is building a three-bedroom, two-bath house at 3029 Little Creek Court for the 2021 project. Proceeds from the sale of the home will be divided among local nonprofits chosen by LCHBA.

Black said LCHBA is still accepting applications from nonprofits to receive a share of the proceeds.

LCHBA’s four Casa with a Cause houses built since 2014 have raised nearly $350,000 for local nonprofits.

Tyson Brown Memorial Build My Future program

LCHBA is partnering with Las Cruces Public Schools on its second annual Build My Future program, renamed in honor of Brown.

The program gives local high-school students a chance to spend a day working in the local construction industry.

This year’s event will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 2345-2355 E. Nevada Ave., where learning labs will allow students to try their hands at various construction-industry practices.

KT Homes, owned by Las Cruces contractor Kent Thurston, is building homes at those sites while providing training and hands-on experience to students.

Rawson Builders Supply and Doña Ana Community College are sponsoring the program, along with LCHBA.
