THE FOUNDATION FOR LAS CRUCES MUSEUMS

Museums foundation hosts rug auction, reading by U.S. poet laureate Joy Harjo

The Foundation for Las Cruces Museums (FLCM) will hold its sixth Navajo Rug Auction Fundraiser at noon Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Center for Spiritual Living, 575 N. Main St. A preview of all items will be held 9 to 11:30 a.m.

As part of Native American Heritage Month, two other Foundation-sponsored events will also take place that weekend, FLCM said in a news release.

U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo will read from her work at 5 p.m. Saturday at Rio Grande Theatre, 211 N. Main St. The performance is free, but because seats are limited, tickets are required and are available at www.eventbrite.com/e/195221461647. Harjo will conduct a book signing after the reading, approximately 6:15 to 7 p.m. The event is funded by FLCM, the City of Las Cruces and the National Endowment of the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

“We are very excited that the Museum Foundation is able to assist in sponsoring Poet Laureate Joy Harjo’s appearance here in Las Cruces,” said Foundation President Randy Fromm. “Events like our rug auction fundraiser help us continue to provide support for cultural events like this. Come Downtown for the amazing rugs. Stay for the poetry reading!”

In addition, rug auctioneers R.B. Burnham and Company will hold a Native American jewelry sale and will offer informal appraisals of Native-made items, 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the Center for Spiritual Living. There is a $10 fee per appraised item, with proceeds to benefit FLCM. Kachinas dolls and paintings will not be appraised.

FLCM is an all-volunteer charitable organization that provides support for Las Cruces museums.
