Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) has sponsored $5,000 in dog adoptions from ACTion Program for Animals (APA) of Las Cruces beginning this month, APA said in a news release. Eligible adoptions include dogs APA has pulled from the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV).

“We are extremely grateful for this sponsorship from BFAS, as it will cover the adoption fees for most of our dogs," said APA Executive Director Michel Meunier. “This sponsorship will cover adoption fees for our large dogs and most of our P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success) prison-trained dogs.”

APA, a nonprofit animal rescue with an adoption and education center, always has numerous animals available for adoption and, to save their lives, frequently takes in animals from ASCMV, the shelter jointly operated by the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County, when it is at capacity.

BFAS is a nonprofit that operates the nation’s largest sanctuary for homeless animals. It provides adoption, spay/neuter and educational programs.

APA has joined NBCUniversal Local’s 2022 Clear The Shelters pet adoption and donation Aug. 1-31. This is the eighth consecutive year NBC and Telemundo-owned stations are partnering with affiliate stations and animal shelters and rescues to promote pet adoption and help raise funds to support animal welfare, APA said. Since its inception in 2015, Clear The Shelters has helped more than 700,000 pets find new homes.

As a result of its participation in the Clear The Shelters campaign, APA is offering all felines for half-off adoption fees in August, Meunier said.

APA will hold a P.A.W.S.-specific adoption event at Petco, 3050 E. Lohman Ave., building D, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13.

APA’s adoption center, 537 N. Solano Drive, is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and by appointment.

Call the adoption center line at 575-571-4654. For other information, leave a message at 575-644-0505 and email mail@apalascruces.org. Visit apalascruces.org.

APA is a progressive animal welfare organization seeking to improve the quality of life for companion animals in Doña Ana County and greatly reduce the number of unwanted animals impounded and euthanized at the municipal shelter as well as keep people and their pets together. Since May 2012, APA has rescued more than 5,500 animals. The majority of these have been dogs and cats/kittens pulled from ASCMV. APA is able to do this through volunteer work of rescue/foster coordinators, foster families, and donations.

BFAS is a leading animal welfare organization working to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters by 2025. Founded in 1984, Best Friends is a pioneer in the no-kill movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from an estimated 17 million per year to around 355,000. BFAS runs lifesaving programs across the country as well as the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary. Visit bestfriends.org.
