BURN LAKE

Nearly 2.5 tons of trash collected at Burn Lake

Posted

Volunteers who participated in the March 20 cleanup of Burn Lake collected 2.45 tons of trash during their four-hour endeavor, Las Cruces Police Department spokesman Dan Trujillo said.

Las Cruces Utilities provided two large roll-off dumpsters for the cleanup, and both were filled to the brim by the end of the event, Trujillo said.

A large amount of dead vegetation remains on the dry lakebed and will be cleared at a later date.

More than 60 volunteers from Las Cruces, New Mexico State University and El Paso participated in the cleanup, which was organized by several city departments. Pizza was served to volunteers following the event.

The project received assistance from Las Cruces police, Codes Enforcement, Las Cruces Public Works, Las Cruces Utilities, Keep Las Cruces Beautiful and volunteer organizations, including NMSU Aggies without Limits, the NMSU Society of Human Resources and the Roadrunner Prevention Group, which helps steer youth away from drug and alcohol use.

The Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, Gospel Rescue Mission, El Crucero and the Las Cruces Farmer’s and Crafts Market are also lent their support to the cleanup effort.

The Las Cruces Police Department thanks all those who participated in the cleanup, Trujillo said.
