New art gallery features artist’s unique photogravures

Posted

Gallery 925 has opened its doors at 925 N. Mesquite St., just a five-minute walk east from Main Street downtown.

Owner Diane Alire bought the property in January, completed renovations and decided to open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays by appointment only until public health orders are eased or lifted.

“I wanted to share the work,” said Alire, a native of Alabama who moved to Las Cruces six years ago after living and working in Albuquerque.

Alire’s work consists of photographs and photogravures, a process which “involves transferring a photograph to a photosensitive plate, developing the plate and then inking it and printing it on an etching press,” she said. “This produces limited-edition prints.”

Photogravures give Alire and other artists “an opportunity for more creativity,” she said, because they allow for “all sorts of changes,” like adding different colors and changing or even eliminating elements in the original photograph.

“I may be one of the few galleries in town that shows photogravures,” she said.

Alire is exhibiting her own work in her 900-square-foot gallery right now, including photographs, photogravures and mixed-media pieces.

“My subject matter is very eclectic,” she said. “My favorite thing to photograph is architecture.”

Alire plans to show the work of other artists and offer photogravure workshops, perhaps as early as next summer. She taught photography classes at a private college in Albuquerque and at Doña Ana Community College in Las Cruces.
