“The people of New Mexico have really cooperated” in the state’s efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19, state Human Services Department Sec. David Scrase said at the May 28 news conference. Scrase said the state reached its peak for the virus May 1 and has reached a spread rate of about 1.15, which is the current target. The state’s southwest quadrant, which includes Doña Ana County, is at 1.16, he said, and seems to be moving in a positive direction. “It’s the social distancing that’s really making the difference in our state,” Scrase said. “We rely on all of you to do the right thing,” he said. “If you wear a mask, you protect other people,” Scrase said, add that the virus is sometimes transmitted by people who have it but are asymptomatic.
