After winning the opening series against Illinois-Chicago, the NM State baseball team will look to continue their winning ways when Oakland comes to town for a three-game set.  

AGGIE FACTS 

  • The Aggies lead the all-time series against the Golden Grizzlies 4-3. The last meeting between the two squads came back in 2014.
  • Sammy Natera earned a pair of national awards after a masterful start against UIC. Natera was named as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and the National Pitcher of the Week by the College Baseball Foundation and the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • After the first weekend of Division I baseball, Natera leads the nation with 14 strikeouts. 
  • As a pitching staff, the Aggies are striking out 15.4 batters per nine innings of action, the third-highest rate in the nation. NM State trails just Jackson State and Florida State. 
  • Second basemen Kevin Jimenez picked up a flurry of preseason awards. The junior from Arizona was named to the Preseason All-WAC Team and named as one of the top 50 second basemen in college baseball by D1Baseball.
  • Catcher Logan Gallina and Natera both appeared in the top-five of D1Baseball’s Top Prospects list for the WAC. Friday’s starting pitcher Rorik Maltrud also appears on the list, coming in at #15.
  • The Aggies are amid a 13-game homestand to open the season. After hosting UIC and Oakland, NM State will host Prairie View A&M for four games and open WAC play against Seattle U for three games.
  • This is the second consecutive weekend in which the Aggies have played a Horizon League opponent.
  • In 2021, Zerek Saenz led the WAC in hits (75) and on-base percentage (.471). Ethan Mann knocked in a conference-best 50 runs while Jimenez drew a league-high 41 walks.
  • Rorik Maltrud, Sammy Natera, and Ian Mejia are set to open the season on the mound for the Aggies. 

ABOUT THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES 

  • Oakland opened their season with a series win against CSU – Bakersfield. After dropping the season opener, Oakland won 10-6 on Saturday and 7-0 on Sunday. 
  • The Golden Grizzlies are third in Division I baseball with four sacrifice bunts throughout the opening week. 
  • Oakland went 12-24 in Horizon League play in 2021, finishing 18-29 overall. The Golden Grizzlies finished the regular season by winning three of four games against Purdue Fort Wayne. 
  • In the series against Purdue Fort Wayne, the Golden Grizzlies showed their offensive abilities, plating 17 runs in two separate games. 
  • Jordan Banfield is in his second season at the helm of Oakland’s program. Banfield was most recently the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Akron.
