NMSU golfer tied for first after two rounds in Dallas

As a team, NM State is in 11th at the Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS, Texas  – With a strong field of competition and ranked opponents, the NM State women’s golf team teed off the opening day of the Trinity Forest Invitational on Monday. The Aggies found themselves in 11th place after the first day. 

Alison Gastelum played her best round of the season in the afternoon, shooting a 68 (-4) to take a share atop the leaderboard. Splitting the honors with Lovisa Gunnar from Tulsa, Gastelum is in prime position to make a run at her first individual championship of the year.  

Round One 

  • Alison Gastelum paced the way for the Aggies, shooting a 74 (+2). With birdies on five and sixteen, Gastelum played a consistent round of golf to open the day.
  • Much like Gastelum, Valentina Origel picked up a birdie on five to highlight her opening round. 
  • Despite being under the weather, Amelia McKee posted the second-best score of the morning for NM State. McKee shot a 78 in the opening round, good for a tie for ninth place, before having to withdraw. 
  • Alex Quihuis tapped in for birdie on five before also birdieing on 17 as well. Origen finished her opening round with an 83 on the scorecard.

Round Two 

  • Gastelum shot her best round of the season with a 68 (-4) in the afternoon session. In the final twelve holes of the day, Gastelum did not make a mistake, shooting four-under without a bogey.
  • Meiji Tungprapunvong eagled on 16 to pair alongside two birdies to help Gastelum pace the way for NM State. In the second round, Tungprapunvong shot a 73 (+1).
  • Between holes nine and sixteen, Valentina Origel played an extremely clean stretch, shooting just one-over.
