NMSU Jazz Ensemble to celebrate 'Birds for No Particular Reason'

Posted

The New Mexico State University Jazz Ensemble has its first concert of the semester at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at the Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society (MVBJS), First Christian Church, 1809 El Paseo Road.

Tickets are $1 for students with ID, $5 for MVBJS members and $10 for non-members.

Under the wing of NMSU Assistant Professor of trumpet and jazz, Jacob Dalager, the NMSU Jazz Ensemble will present a concert entitled “Ornithology: A Concert about Birds for No Particular Reason.” “And that's exactly what it is,” Dalager said. “The big band will be playing tunes celebrating our avian friends and the bebop saxophonist that soared higher than anyone before him, Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker.  And though the concert's theme may be a hoot, in owl seriousness, the tunes are all good eggs, and the students can play their tails off.”

The concert will include performances of “Ornithology” by Charlie Parker, “Birdland” by Josef Zawinul, “Bye, Bye, Blackbird” by Ray Henderson, “Lullaby of Birdland” by George Shearing, “The Raven Speaks” by Keith Jarrett, “The Chicken” by "Pee Wee" Ellis, “Whirlybird” by Neal Hefti and “Bird Count” by Maria Schneider.
