NMSU Theatre’s ‘Tracer’ lets audience help solve a mystery

Posted

“Tracer” is a new play created by playwright Hannah Benitez especially for the New Mexico State University Theatre Department.

In the show, a student has fallen ill after attending a Halloween party and a contact tracer has been sent to investigate foul play. Audience members will be invited to assist that “Tracer” in solving the mystery of, "Who done it?"

The cast includes talented Las Cruces community actor Nora Brown as the contact tracer, Elia Vasquez as Madison, Edward Goldstein as Dustin, Jet Montellano as Carolina, Carol Flinchbaugh as Donna, Peyton Womble as Tori, Ariel Aguilar as Jen, Imani Caldwell as Reed, Dom Gomez as Ryan and Elijah Reyes as Eddie.

The production is led by director Nichole Hamilton, an assistant professor in the Theatre Department, along with cinematographer Luis Gutierrez, production coordinator Jazmen Escarcega, costume designer Carolina Ortiz, production stage manager Mike Wise, light and set consultant Jim Billings, technical director and props master Dave Herford, web consultant Frank Sage and crew members Caitlin Skibyak, John Ellis, Erik Munoz and Kaylee Rogers.

Playwright Benitez was the finalist in the Theatre Department’s High Desert Playwright Workshop competition.

Her play, “End of the Exodus,” had been selected for a full, onstage production in 2020. Due to COVID-19, the Theatre Department and its American Southwest Theatre Company nonprofit commissioned Benitez to create a new play that could be produced virtually.

"Our idea was to create something topical, with the students' voices in mind, but also to play with form,” said director Hamilton. “What is theatre? Can storytelling be reflected though the current, necessary mediums – film, live streaming, social media – and still be considered theatre? Digital Theatre?"

“Tracer” will be available to live stream at 7 p.m. every evening, Wednesday, Nov. 11-Wednesday, Nov. 18. There will not be a show on Sunday, Nov. 15.

The running time for “Tracer” is approximately 50 minutes, with an optional post-show discussion.

Individual show passes are $10, and season tickets are available for $50, which gives ticket holders access to six productions during the 2020-21 theatre season, including Broadway Onstage.
