NMSU's Ian Mejia named national player of the week

Mejia becomes the sixth Aggie to earn national honors this season

PHOENIX – Friday night was all about NM State pitchers, past and present. As Kyle Bradish was making his MLB debut for the Baltimore Orioles, Ian Mejia was making his case as an Aggie great. Mejia's dominant Friday performance against Dixie State was recognized by Collegiate Baseball on Monday morning as he was named a National Player of the Week.

Just one week after Logan Gallina earned the honor, Mejia earns national honors for the first time in his career. On Friday night, Mejia struck out 13 over 7.0 innings, falling just two shy of the NM State single-game record.

Mejia's 13 strikeout night was the second-highest among Aggie pitchers this year, trailing just Sammy Natera, who struck out 14 against UIC on opening weekend. Mejia has fanned a team-best 63 hitters this year and racked up a team-high four wins along the way. The Tucson native's 63 strikeouts rank fourth in the WAC this season.

With a 3.84 ERA, Mejia leads all NM State starting pitchers and is the second-best among all pitchers, trailing just Frank Dickson IV (3.37).

Mejia and the Aggies will be back in action on Friday night in Riverside, California as they take on WAC West foe California Baptist. The Aggies and Lancers will square off three times over the weekend as they battle for position heading towards the 2022 WAC Baseball Tournament.
