Oñate baseball, softball both win in opening round of playoffs



The Oñate High School baseball team upset top-seeded Rio Rancho in the first round of the 5A state playoffs with a 1-0 win Tuesday, June 22, in Rio Rancho.

The Knights scored the only run of the game in the top of the ninth for the win. Oñate will play La Cueva at La Cueva  in Albuquerque at 4 p.m. Thursday in the semifinal round. La Cueva is seeded fourth, while Oñate is eighth.

In the 5A softball playoffs, Oñate beat Cibola 6-0 Tuesday in the first round. The Lady Knights will next face top-seeded Cleveland High of Rio Rancho at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cleveland.

In the 1A baseball playoffs, Mesilla Valley Christian lost to Gateway Christian 19-2 in the first round on Tuesday.

In the 4A baseball playoffs, Santa Teresa lost to Artesia 5-2, also in the first round on Tuesday.
