Organ Mountain baseball loses in state quarterfinal round to Hobbs; Centennial softball knocked into consolation bracket

The Organ Mountain High School baseball team saw its dreams of winning a 5A state championship come to an end Thursday afternoon.

The Knights, 25-5 overall and the fourth seed in 5A, lost to No. 5 Hobbs 5-1 at the Santa Ana Star Field at the University of New Mexico in the state quarterfinal round.

The Knights had won their district for the second year in a row and won their opening round series beating Los Lunas 2 games to 1 at the Field of Dreams May 6-7.

In 5A softball, No. 2 Centennial lost to No. 7 Hobbs 5-4 at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho but rebounded in the consolation bracket to beat No. 6 Cleveland 2-1 at Cleveland's home softball complex. The Hawks, 22-7, will next play against No. 4 La Cueva at 11 a.m. Friday at Cleveland High.

In A-2A softball, Mesilla Valley Christian beat Jal 19-13 in the consolation bracket to start its day and then beat No. 3 Santa Rosa 15-0 to continue to advance in the consolation bracket.  The SonBlazers will next play against No. 2 Tularosa  later this evening at  Rio Rancho High.
