Recovery Conference set for Sept. 30 at City Hall

The City of Las Cruces Suicide Prevention Task Force will host “Recovery Is for Everyone” 2022 Southwest Summit, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at City Hall council chambers, 700 S. Main St.

A Recovery Night Celebration will follow, 6-9 p.m. at Plaza de Las Cruces, 100 N. Main St. downtown.

There is no charge to attend, but registration is required.

Here is the agenda:

8:30 a.m.: Registration

8:50 a.m.: Opening remarks, Mayor Pro Tempore Kasandra Gandara, who created the task force in 2016

9:05 a.m.: Personal testimony (Oxford House)

9:20 a.m.: Speaker Carlos Briano, public information office for Drug Enforcement Administration’s El Paso division, which includes New Mexico, “One Pill Can Kill”

10:10 a.m.: Poetry reading

10:25 a.m.: Speaker Montevis Price, veterans justice outreach specialist for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Air Force veteran, “Veterans”

11:15 a.m.: Speaker Athena R. Huckaby, consultant who works with providers on how to work more effectively with patients, “Myths, Facts and Treatment Outcomes”

Noon: Lunch

1:05 p.m.: Speaker Ky Miller, licensed substance abuse counselor, with Peak Behavioral Services in Las Cruces

1:55 p.m.: Poetry reading

2:10 p.m.: Speaker Sandra Meza, licensed master social worker, clinical provider trainer for Western Sky Community Care

3 p.m.: LGBTQ+ panel discussion

3:50 p.m.: Personal testimony (Oxford House)

4 p.m.: Jess Spohn, Doña Ana County Crisis Triage Center update

4:15 p.m.: Closing, parade to the plaza

The Las Cruces Suicide Prevention Task Force was formed to “raise awareness, educate, train and support our community by developing and sustaining partnerships, providing technical assistance and contributing to policy and legislative initiatives related to suicide prevention,” according to the organization’s website.
