The New Mexico State University Academy for Learning in Retirement (ALR) has announced that a retired member of the clergy and university religious studies faculty member will lead ALR’s May 2021 Zoom series entitled “The Wisdom Years: A Guide to Intentional Aging.”

Dr. Barbara Skye Boyd, a retired director of outreach and faculty member in the Religious Studies Program at the University of Oklahoma (OU) and a retired Presbyterian clergy member, will present the programs, Jeffrey Brown of ALR said in an email.

Boyd has a B.A. and an M.A. in journalism and human relations from OU and masters and doctor of ministry degrees from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.

Boyd’s ALR topics will be:

  • Monday, May 3: The Dilemmas and Lessons of Becoming A Senior, which will focus on the shift from institutional life to intentional life as they move from a work career to retirement; making peace with change.
  • Wednesday, May 5: Breaking the Vows of our Younger Years, which will consider that hearth and heart can no longer be located in an exterior landscape, but rather must become an interior space within; recalculating where we live.
  • Monday, May 10: Becoming Anonymous Before Becoming Autonomous, which discusses giving up as people learn to become anonymous and experience the newly found gift of autonomous freedom in retirement; surrendering our accomplishments to create a new future.
  • Wednesday, May 12: The Wisdom Years: A Trial and a Trail, will consider the so-called wisdom years are not automatically granted due to age or status, but are rather the result of the ability to “blaze the trail toward our own demise while living with presence and grace,” Brown said. The session is subtitled “The Dance of Life while awaiting our Death.”

Register for sessions prior to 5 p.m. the day before each presentation at dacc.nmsu.edu/alr (link: Memberships and Presentations, Registration for Programs and Presentations). ALR will e-mail Zoom links to registrants for each session during the evening before the presentation.

Enroll as an ALR member for $3 and register for individual sessions for $4 per session or enroll in individual sessions for $5 per session.
