Salvation Army needs help to make holiday season bright for less fortunate

Posted

The Salvation Army Las Cruces invites one and all to join in the fun of many upcoming events to benefit those in need in our community.

  • Truck or Treat event, 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28. Event participants will decorate their cars and hand out candy in the back parking lot of Planet Fitness, 1100 N. Telshor Blvd. Families can park in the back parking lot of Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q, 1020 N. Telshor Blvd.
  • Christmas Angels program. Christmas assistance sign-ups for families with children ages 0-14 will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 25-29, and Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 1-3. Parents who are struggling financially can sign up. The Salvation Army places each participating child's information (first name only, age, gender and three wish-list items) on an Angel Tree tag and places the tags on trees in select businesses throughout the community so a community member can take a tag(s), purchase a gift(s) for the child and return the gift (with the tag) to the location where they got the tag or to the Salvation Army at 1590 California Ave. When parents apply, bring proof of all income and a birth certificate for each child.
  • Red Kettle Campaign, Monday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Dec. 24. Every year, the Salvation Army conducts this annual fundraiser in front of businesses throughout the community. The fundraiser provides much of the funding the Salvation Army uses to help Doña Ana County residents throughout the year. Volunteer bell ringers are needed.
  • Toy drive, 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at the old K-Mart on Bataan Memorial Highway. From the K-Mart, the toy-drive cruise will travel down Main Street to Lohman Avenue, down Lohman to Telshor Boulevard and down Telshor to Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q, 1020 N. Telshor Blvd. For the last three years, the Salvation Army has had more than 125 cars/trucks/motorcycles/off roaders participate in this cruise across Las Cruces to help collect toys for its Angel Tree program for families that may not have a Christmas this year without the community’s help. People can participate by driving a vehicle in the cruise and donating a boy and a girl gift valued at $10 each, or by stopping by Rudy's Bar-B-Q from 2 to 5 p.m. to check out participating vehicles and donate gifts to the program.

To register for the toy drive and for questions about the Christmas Angels campaign or the toy drive, contact Salvation Army Capt. Noel Evans at 907-209-5491 and noel.evans@usw.salvationarmy.org.
