September activities at the Branigan include Dreamers, the Mexican Revolution, Qatar

Here are September 2021 activities sponsored by Branigan Cultural Center (BCC):

  • 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1: “Culture of Empowerment: Community Roundtable: Dreamers.” Via Zoom. Hear from Dreamers and advocates about the history and policies of the Dream Act, experiences of Dreamers and the current situation for Dreamers in New Mexico. “Culture of Empowerment is a series designed around the idea that people are powerful when learning together,” the City of Las Cruces said in a news release. The theme for July to September is Youth and Migration, which is inspired by the current BCC courtyard exhibit “Uncaged Art.” The exhibit features artwork created by youth kept in immigration detention at the U.S.-Mexico border.

  • 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9: History Notes: "Women Survivors of the Battle of Columbus" with Patricia Kiddney. Via Zoom. The program continues the theme of “History of Revolts and Revolutions,” as listeners hear the stories of women who survived the Battle of Columbus in Columbus, New Mexico, during the Mexican Revolution. Kiddney shares stories of survivors of Pancho Villa’s raid on Columbus March 9, 1916, using the first-hand accounts of Maud Wright, Susan Parks and Sarah Hoover.   • 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9: “What’s the Word: Arabic - A Trip to Qatar.” In person. Learn about the culture, food, music and language of Arabic-speaking countries with this “visit” to Qatar, a nation of 2.8 million that borders Saudi Arabia and has the fourth highest per-capita income in the world. Register to attend this in-person event by emailing education@las-cruces.org.
