Sister power: Mas Art moves to new location

Sisters Malu and Sandra Bender have taken their art and frame business, Mas Art, from its downtown location to a spacious, new storefront. But it wasn’t easy.

“We are so exhausted, and we are so happy,” Malu said. “We did everything in six weeks.”

By “everything,” she means they completely renovated the building they bought at 144 Wyatt Drive. By “we,” she is talking about their little team of four – Malu and her husband, Scott Tufte; and Sandra and her partner, Adrian Tenorio.

Mas Art started in a garage, but suppliers said they would only ship to a storefront. Malu and Sandra Arts became Mas Art at 126 N. Main St. During COVID-19, the store closed for a while and is now open on an appointment-only basis. The sales turned out to be good in June and July, but the bills were still piling up, and they were thinking about closing their doors for good until realtor Angela Potter had a better idea. They bought the building.

“We rented the Main Street location for seven years,” Malu said. “But rent is expensive, and we thought with this money, we could pay a mortgage, have a gallery, offer classes [and host] wine parties.”

The new building has been configured into four independent spaces, with the art shop in one and a gallery in another. Two other two are rentals.

Mas Art opens for COVID-safe business on Friday, Aug. 7. There will be a grand opening celebration in September, which will also mark Mas Art’s seventh anniversary. Visit www.masartllc.com or find them on Facebook and Instagram. Email info@masartllc.com or call 575-526-9113.
