Student emergency relief funds available to NMSU students

Posted

COVID-19 implications continue to have a financial impact on many New Mexico State University students, and another round of emergency financial aid grants for students is available. Through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, NMSU received $7 million in Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds II. With direction from the U.S. Department of Education, NMSU will begin to process and distribute the funds.

Currently there are 16,906 students within the NMSU system eligible to receive funding from HEERF II. Aid is open to all degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students who are citizens or eligible non-citizens who are enrolled in at least one credit for spring 2021.

“Eligible students who are in need should ensure that they complete the application at https://fa.nmsu.edu/heerf/. The funds are there to assist them,” said Vandeen McKenzie, director of financial aid at NMSU. “I know our students are very considerate of each other as was evidenced during the CARES Act funds application process. We had students who applied for the funds then cancelled their application because they thought other students with greater need should be allowed to access the funds. That is our Aggie spirit at work, we all take care of each other, and this fund is here to assist you, so please access it.”

NMSU is using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as FAFSA, to determine if a student is a citizen or eligible non-citizen. Students who plan on applying for HEERF II but haven’t completed the 2020-2021 FAFSA should do so immediately. Grants are $1,200 or $800 depending on students’ expected family contribution range.

McKenzie said students can use the grants to cover any cost of attendance component or emergency costs associated with COVID-19 such as tuition, food, housing, child care and health care, including mental health.

To apply for HEERF II, visit https://fa.nmsu.edu/heerf/.

For an immediate release of funds, students should complete a direct deposit at https://uar.nmsu.edu/refunds/direct-deposit/. Once a request is submitted, it will take approximately seven to 10 business days to review a request, and an additional five business days for University Accounts Receivable to process direct deposits.
